Alexandria
Alexandria Egypt is the second capital of Egypt and its title
"Bride of the Mediterranean". It was the capital of Egypt in
the ancient periods. It is the capital of Alexandria
province and its biggest city. It is located on the coast of
the Mediterranean Sea about 55 km northwest of the Nile
Delta, bordered in the north by the Mediterranean Sea and
Lake Mariout in the south till 71 Kilo on the
Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road, bordered in the east by the
Abu Qir Gulf and the city of Edkou, and the area of Sidi
Kreir in the west until 30 km on the Alexandria-Matruh
highway.
Alexandria Egypt has many landmarks, including Egypt's largest
seaports (Alexandria Port and Dekheila Port). The city has
about 80% of Egypt's total imports and exports.
It has also the Alexandria Library which has more than 8
millions books. Also, Alexandria includes various museums
and archeological places such as Qaitbay Citadel, pillar of
masts and other places. The population of Alexandria Egypt is
around 4,123,869 citizens according to the statics 2006.
People work in the agriculture, industrial and commercial
fields in Alexandria. It divides to 9 administrative
suburbs. They are El Montazh First suburb, El Montazh Second
suburb, East suburb, Middle Suburb, West suburb, El Gomrok
Suburb, El Agamy Suburb, Ameriah First suburb and Ameriah
Second suburb.
The establishment of Alexandria Egypt began in 332 B.C. by Great
Alexander. This was done by filling part of the water
separating between a stretched island in front of the main
coast, called "Pharos" which has an old port, and a small
village called "Raktos" or "Rkoda" surrounded by other small
villages which also spread between the sea and Lake Mariout.
It was taken by Great Alexander and his successor as a
capital of Egypt for around thousand years, until the
Islamic conquest of Egypt by Amr ibn al-Aas in 641 A.D.
Alexandria has been known and are famous throughout history
with many landmarks such as the Old Library of Alexandria
which includes more than 700,000 volumes and are famous also
with the Alexandria Lighthouse, which was considered one of
the seven wonders of the world. This is because of its great
height of up to about 120 meters. It remained until was
destroyed by a strong earthquake in 1307 A.D. |
